We’ve all heard of the ways we can help save the planet, such as conserving energy in our homes and driving fewer miles in our cars. Such common environmentally-conscious strategies become a lot easier when technology supports our efforts. It turns out that high-speed Internet-also known as broadband- can do exactly that.

The California Broadband Council (CBC) was established by SB 1462 (Chapter 338, Statutes of 2010) to promote broadband deployment in unserved and underserved areas of the state as defined by the Public Utilities Commission, and broadband adoption throughout the state.

California’s Broadband Council held its first meeting aimed at allowing stakeholders to identify key communications corridors across the state. This will roll into the plan to develop the state’s broadband infrastructure, delivering services to 98 percent of households, which is one of the council’s legislative goals.

A lengthy document released by The American Consumer Institute reviewed industry and academic material, including 181 referenced items, to quantify the existing and future impacts of broadband. The paper stated that greenhouse gas reductions, resulting from the deployment and utilization of broadband Internet access, could exceed 1.1 billion tons over 10 years.
